Roland Hans-Peter Buckingham-Hsiao is a visual artist, educator, researcher based in China and the UK. His work investigates the boundaries of language, viz. text-image, text-body, and text-object relations, often via East-West cultural exchange. His creative practice is interdisciplinary but centered around drawing and the embodied and performative aspects of writing calligraphy. He studied Chinese calligraphy in Taiwan and at the LanTing Academy of Calligraphy, University of Shaoxing and has a PhD in calligraphy studies (grapho-aesthetics) from the International Research Centre for Calligraphy, University of Sunderland, U.K. He has exhibited artwork at Tate Britain, UK, the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, UK, and many other international venues. He has lectured at various universities in China and England, including the Royal College of Art, London. He has published two books and several research papers in indexed journals. In 2025 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society.
